Outrigger canoe paddling has its origins in the development and spread of the coastal culture of the Pacific rim region about 30,000 years ago, with canoes playing and integral role in the survival and transformation of ancient cultures. It was many thousands of years before outrigger canoe racing became a competitive sport and maritime advancement saw the canoe evolve to the sleek racing boats of today. The first race, initially for men, was in the Hawaiian Islands in Waikiki in 1917. Noosa Outrigger Canoe Club (NOCC) was formed in 1991 by its only life member, Evan Gartrell, who was introduced to the sport at Hamilton Island in the late 1980s. Evan went on to compete at Molokai in Hawaii. As a sport it offers an excellent means to improve upper body strength, general health and well being. From a recreational perspective you can participate in outrigging at on a social level, enjoying the beautiful Noosa River and environment at a more leisurely pace. |
